The Mothman was first spotted on November 15, 1966, by two couples, the Scarberrys and the Mallettes, who claimed to have seen a large, winged creature with glowing red eyes. The creature was described as being over 7 feet tall, with wings spanning over 10 feet, and was said to have emitted a high-pitched squeaking sound.
Over the next 13 months, more than 100 people reported seeing the Mothman, including firefighters, farmers, and pilots. The creature was always seen at night, and its appearance was often accompanied by strange phone calls, men in black, and reports of eye burns and animal mutilations.
The Mothman's presence was also linked to a series of bizarre events, including the collapse of the Silver Bridge on December 15, 1967, which killed 46 people. The bridge's collapse was seen as a catastrophic event that was somehow connected to the Mothman's appearances, leading some to believe that the creature was a harbinger of doom.
Today, the Mothman has become a cultural icon, with a statue in the center of Point Pleasant and an annual festival. However, for the old residents who remember the winter of 1967, the Mothman is not just a tourist attraction, but a reminder of the terror and mystery that surrounded its appearances, and the unexplained events that continue to haunt the town to this day.
